1. About AUTSA membership
The Auckland University of Technology Students' Association(AUTSA) is the recognised students' association for Auckland University of Technology (AUT) under the Education and Training Act 2020. AUTSA is an incorporated society registered under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 and a registered charity (CC30928) with Charities Services New Zealand.
Membership of AUTSA is voluntary and free. These terms set out who is eligible for membership, the rights and obligations of members, and how membership may cease.
2. Membership eligibility
A member of AUTSA is a person who:
- Is a current student enrolled at Auckland University of Technology;
- Chooses to opt in to AUTSA membership by registering through AUTSA or by any other means designated by AUTSA; and
- Has their name added to the AUTSA Register of Members.
You may register for membership at any time during your enrolment at AUT by signing up through AUTSA or at an AUTSA event or service point. Membership is separate from your AUT enrolment — you must actively engage with AUTSA and positively consent to be registered as a member.
3. Positive consent
In accordance with the Education and Training Act 2020 and AUTSA's constitution, membership requires your positive consent. You must actively choose to become a member — membership is never automatic or compulsory.
When you sign up through AUTSA, you will be asked to confirm that you wish to become an AUTSA member. This confirmation constitutes your positive consent to be added to the AUTSA Register of Members.
4. Member rights
As a registered AUTSA member, you have the right to:
- Vote in AUTSA elections and referenda.
- Stand for election to AUTSA representative positions.
- Participate in AUTSA general meetings.
- Access AUTSA services including advocacy, hardship support (Tautoko), events, clubs, and the Kete Pantry.
- Receive communications about AUTSA activities, elections, and services.
5. Associated members
People who are not currently enrolled AUT students may register with AUTSA as associated members. Associated members can access certain AUTSA services and events but do not have the right to:
- Vote in AUTSA elections or referenda.
- Stand for election to AUTSA representative positions.
- Be counted in the AUTSA Register of Members for governance purposes.
Associated membership may include AUT alumni, community members, or other individuals who wish to engage with AUTSA activities. Access to specific services is at AUTSA's discretion.
6. Member obligations
As a member or associated member, you agree to:
- Provide accurate information when registering and keep your details up to date.
- Use AUTSA services and facilities respectfully and in accordance with our Terms of Use.
- Not misrepresent your eligibility for membership or services.
- Treat AUTSA staff, volunteers, and fellow students with respect.
7. Cessation of membership
Your AUTSA membership ceases when:
- You are no longer enrolled as a student at AUT (your membership will transition to associated membership status upon graduation or withdrawal).
- You voluntarily withdraw from membership by notifying AUTSA in writing or through AUTSA.
- Your membership is revoked by AUTSAin accordance with AUTSA's constitution and disciplinary procedures, following due process.
Upon cessation of full membership, you may still access AUTSA Connect as an associated member with limited rights as described in section 5 above.
8. Privacy and data
AUTSA collects and processes your personal information in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 and our Privacy Policy. The AUTSA Register of Members is maintained securely and is not shared with AUT or third parties except where required by law or as necessary for AUTSA governance purposes (e.g. verifying electoral rolls for AUTSA elections).
9. Fees
AUTSA membership is free. AUTSA is funded through the Student Services Levy collected by AUT under the Education and Training Act 2020. No additional fee is charged for membership or access to core AUTSA services.
10. Changes to these terms
AUTSA may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated to members through AUTSA or by email. Changes affecting member rights or governance will be made in accordance with AUTSA's constitution and relevant legislation.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, including the Education and Training Act 2020 and the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. AUTSA's constitution, as registered under the Incorporated Societies Act, takes precedence where these terms conflict with constitutional provisions.
