Mature Students at AUT

You belong here. AUTSA supports students of all ages and stages — whether you're 25 or 55, returning to study or starting something new.

You're not alone
  • Starting or returning to university as a mature student can feel daunting — especially when the people around you seem younger, or when it feels like everyone else already knows the ropes.
  • The truth is, there are many students at AUT who are in the same boat. Whether you're 25 or 55, changing careers or studying for the first time, you're not the only one navigating this.
  • "Mature student" is a broad term and means different things to different people. What matters is that you're here, and you belong here.
  • Your life experience is a genuine asset. Many lecturers and fellow students value the perspectives that come from real-world knowledge and lived experience.
Balancing study, work & life
  • Juggling family commitments, work, and study is something many mature students deal with every day. It's a lot — and it's okay to acknowledge that.
  • AUT offers flexible study options including part-time enrolment, distance learning, and evening classes in some programmes. Talk to your faculty about what might work for your situation.
  • If you're struggling to keep up, AUT's student support services can help with study planning, time management, and academic skills.
  • You don't have to do everything at once. Plenty of students take a lighter course load and still achieve great results.
Financial support
  • Money stress doesn't discriminate by age. Whether it's rent, groceries, or unexpected costs, AUTSA Tautoko provides hardship support to all AUT students.
  • You can apply for grocery vouchers and emergency financial assistance — applications are confidential and assessed individually.
  • The Kete Pantry at City Campus (WC210) is a walk-in food pantry open during semester. No sign-up required.
  • StudyLink allowances and supplements are available to eligible students regardless of age. If you haven't checked your entitlements recently, it's worth another look.
Connect with other students
  • Clubs and communities at AUT aren't just for school leavers — many clubs have members of all ages with shared interests in culture, sport, hobbies, and professional development.
  • Getting involved is one of the best ways to meet people who understand the student experience, including others who are balancing similar commitments.
  • AUTSA also runs events throughout the year — from social gatherings to workshops. Keep an eye on what's coming up.
  • If there's a group you wish existed, you can even start your own club through AUTSA.
Advocacy support
  • If you're having issues with your studies — whether it's an unfair grade, a complaint, or problems with your faculty — AUTSA's advocacy team is here to help.
  • Our advocates support students through formal processes like academic appeals, misconduct allegations, and disputes with the university.
  • The service is free, confidential, and available to all AUTSA members. We're on your side.
Career support
  • You might already have years of career experience — and that's a real advantage. AUT's Employability and Careers team can help you build on what you've already done.
  • Whether you're looking to pivot into a new field, update your CV, or figure out how your degree fits into your next move, they offer free one-on-one appointments.
  • AUT also runs career events, industry networking sessions, and workshops on topics like interview skills and LinkedIn profiles.
