Practical info
The essentials for settling into life in Auckland.
IRD number & bank account
You’ll need an IRD number to work or open a bank account. Apply online at ird.govt.nz — it takes about 10 working days. Most banks offer free student accounts (ANZ, BNZ, ASB, Westpac).
Getting around Auckland
Get an AT HOP card for 40% off buses, trains, and ferries. Top up online or at most dairies. The City Campus is well connected to Britomart and bus routes along Symonds Street.
Healthcare
Enrol with a GP (general practitioner) near campus. If you have a Community Services Card, GP visits and prescriptions are cheaper. AUT Health also offers on-campus services.
AUT International Support
AUT’s International Student Support team can help with visa advice, orientation, and settling in. They’re at the Student Hub on City Campus.
Emergency contacts
Save these numbers in your phone. In an emergency, always call 111 first.
