Auckland Transport doubles student discount to 40%

Auckland Transport has doubled the tertiary student concession from 20% to 40% off all bus, train, and ferry fares across Tāmaki Makaurau. This is a massive win for students — and one AUTSA has been pushing for.

AUTSA and our counterparts at AUSA (Auckland University Students' Association) ran the Fair Fares petition calling on AT and Auckland Council to make public transport genuinely affordable for students. Thousands of students signed it, and we took that voice directly to decision-makers.

What this means for you

• 40% off every bus, train, and ferry trip in Auckland
• If you already have a tertiary concession on your AT HOP card, the new discount applies automatically — no action needed
• New students can apply for the concession online through AT's website
• The discount runs for the duration of your enrolled study period

Why this matters

Transport costs are one of the biggest barriers to students getting to campus. For many AUT students commuting from South or West Auckland, fares add up fast. A 40% discount means real savings — potentially hundreds of dollars a semester.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown confirmed the increase as part of AT's broader commitment to making public transport more accessible. The discount is funded by Auckland Council and applies to all enrolled tertiary students in the Auckland region.

How to get the discount

1. Already have a tertiary concession?You're sorted. The 40% discount is already active on your AT HOP card.
2. New student or don't have one yet? Apply through your MyAT account at at.govt.nz. You'll need proof of current enrolment.
3. Don't have an AT HOP card? You can buy one at any train station, selected dairies, or order online from AT.
