Budget 2026 made two changes that will affect the pockets of many AUT students. The Government has scrapped the final-year fees-free scheme, and universities have again been cleared to raise tuition fees by up to 6% – the third year of increases in a row.
What's changed
- Fees-free: the final-year fees-free entitlement has been removed. First-year fees-free was replaced earlier, and the remaining final-year support is now gone.
- Tuition fees: fees can rise by up to 6%, following increases in 2025 and 2026.
What it means for you
If you were counting on fees-free for your final year, you will now need to budget for those fees or cover them through a Student Loan. The cost of study was one of the biggest issues students raised in our most recent survey, so if you are feeling the pressure, you are not alone.
